we remember Lyons will remember Sept. 11

The Inter-Church Council of Lyons is coordinating several services for the community of Lyons on the first anniversary of September 11.

  • The day of remembrance will begin at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, on Phelps St. at 7:30 a.m. with a Liturgy of the Word with Communion. This will be followed by the 8 a.m. Litany of the Saints and the Litany of Humility.
  • At 8:45 a.m., the time of the first plane crash: Flight 767, the churches of Lyons will join St. Michael's in ringing their bells. Each ringing will be followed by a litany of the names of those who died, followed by a time of silence, until the next ringing.
  • At 9 a.m., the church bells will ring to remember those who died on Flight 175;
  • At 9:45 a.m., the bells will ring to remember those who died on Flight 77.
  • At 10:20 a.m., for those who died on Flight 93.
  • At 10:40 a.m., the bells will be rung to remember those who died in the World Trade Center Towers.
  • At 11:30 a.m. to remember those who died at the Pentagon.
  • Following the ringing of the bells and the final litany, worshippers will process from St. Michael's to The First Lutheran Church of Lyons on Broad Street, where there will be an Ecumenical Worship Service at noon. The Rev. Arthur Sziemeister, pastor will welcome worshippers. Mrs. Deborah Housel, Pastoral Administrator at St. Michael's will preach. The service of remembrance will last approximately 50 minutes.
  • At 7 p.m., there will be Service of Remembrance in Lyons Central Park. It will include singing of the National Anthem, by Chris Santelli of the Lyons Fire Department. Keith Bridger will be the Master of Ceremonies. Members of the Lyons VFW will present the colors and Lyons Scouts will lead the pledge. Scouts are invited to come in uniform. Kurt Simmons of the Lyons Fire Department Explorer's Troop will play taps.

The Rev. King Lewis, pastor of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and sergeant at the Wayne County Jail, will recognize and pray for the Lyons Police, Fire and EMS workers. Fire Commissioner Dennis Alvaro will speak.

The Rev. Cynthia Huling Hummel, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Lyons and Chaplain of the Lyons Fire Department will give the meditation.

Other music is being planned. The service will end with a community sing of patriotic songs and a candle lighting. Everyone is invited to attend this service of remembrance. Please bring a lawn chair and a votive candle.

Following the service, everyone is invited to the Lyons Fire Department for a reception that is being hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary.

In the event of inclement weather, the 7 p.m. service will be held in the Lyons Fire Department.
