Newark has new Police Captain At Tuesday night's Newark Village Board meeting, officials filled the post of Police Captain. Upon a recommendation from Newark Police Chief Richard Bogan, Sergeant Thomas Smith was appointed to the position, replacing Roger VanDemortel, who recently retired. In recommending Smith, Bogan indicated that he was a 28-year veteran of the force, a senior officer, and graduate of the FBI National Academy. Several fellow uniformed officers were present, as was retired Captain VanDemortel. The Newark Village Board quickly and unanimously voted to approve Bogan's nominee and gave Smith a standing ovation. Pictured here are Captain Smith being pinned by his wife, Debbie. In the background, are Village Trustees Joe Bailey and John Palermo.
