Closing sale underway at Ames
ames store closing

The closing of Ames Department Store in the Newark Plaza is underway, and the parking lot is full as bargain hunters head to the aisles.

Ames Department Stores, Inc. of Connecticut will close all stores in the chain, including Newark, Macedon and Ontario. The Newark store, a fixture since 1957, was originally a Rochester-based Neisner's, later called Big N, which opened along with Wegmans in the Plaza.

There will be a company-wide liquidation sale. Thirty full-time and 17 part-time employees will lose their jobs here.
