The picnics, speeches, and parades of today's LABOR DAY were all part of the first celebration, held in New York City in 1882. Its promoter was an Irish-American labor leader named Peter J. McGuire. A carpenter by trade, McGuire had worked since the age of eleven, and in 1882 was president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Approaching the city's Central Labor Union that summer, he proposed a holiday that would applaud 'the industrial spirit - the great vital force of every nation.'

Last Thursday, a group headed for Alexandria Bay for a boat trip on Uncle Sam's line where all enjoyed a delicious buffet before heading for a tour of Boldt Castle. It rained like the dickens when we left the boat and climbed the brick path to the castle, but everyone looked pretty much the same, so no problem. The renovations are lovely, but there is much more to do. (Post cards are available if you are interested.)

Clark and Helen Dingman were visited by their daughter Patricia Ellis and her husband Randy and their daughters Tarra, Mckenzie and Devan from Austin Texas and son Stephen from San Antonio Texas. While they were in the area, they attended the wedding of their cousin, Sharon Yates-Emerson to Willie Meinking on August 3 in Hornell. The three grandchildren took horseback riding lessons and everyone enjoyed barbecues, swimming, croquet and volleyball.

We have a new grandson! Derek Carl was born August 23, weighed 9 lb. and 1 oz. and is 21 inches long. The son of Brian and Jill Adriaansen of Smith Road was welcomed home by his big brother, Craig, who is three-and-a-half.
