Missing Sodus

The air definitely feels different, doesn't it? Well, enjoy the nice days as long as we still have them. If you have fall (and or winter) events you'd like to share please send them along to me.

African-Caribbean Festival: A celebration of the people and culture of the African Diaspora will be on Sunday, September 8 from noon to 6 p.m. at the B. Foreman Park in Pultneyville.

Don't forget the last movie is this weekend at the Point on Saturday (Aug. 31) - a nice way to end the summer. Thanks to Andrew Ramsey and the Village of Sodus Point for The Great Sodus Bay Screen and to all the sponsors who were also a important part of making it all happen. Wouldn't it be fun to have them again next year?

Happy September birthdays to Patty Clark and Lelah Rought.

Good luck to all the parents and students going back to school. It's always fun watching the kids getting back on the buses. (The first couple weeks, they enjoy going.)

KIDS READ OVER 3000 HOURS: Splish Splash Read has been the theme for the children's summer reading program at the Williamson Public Library. The library staff is busy pulling the plug on King Bidgoods Bathtub (children's book by Audrey and Don Wood). The six-foot long cardboard tub was filled with paper fish, hooks, noisemakers, party hats, turkey drumsticks and many more props that children earned this summer by reading. About 339 bathtub reading kits were distributed throughout the summer months. The kits included rubber ducks, bubbles and reading sheets full of suds to keep track of time spent with books. The ceiling of the community room was an impressive sight, with each child's personalized paper tub hanging from it. Every child returning a reading sheet floated over to the duck pond for a prize incentive.

Thirty-three Book Buddies had some extra practice reading this summer. Newly-independent readers teamed up with experienced readers in a successful 5-week program, followed by a special pizza party just for them. The goal of this program was to foster a love of reading in these kids and give them a positive experience at the library. Older Book Buddies learned to help the younger children look for books with simple vocabulary, short sentence length, a good plot, big type and to look at the white space, number of lines per page and placement of illustrations.

More programs kept children cool and drew over 500 for a variety of activities including the Bubblemania show, bubble machine project, Breezy Height Puppet Theater, soap making and fizzy bath salts craft, Lap-Sit storytimes, Splish Splash Craft Day and Bart & Kevin's Rock and Roll Reading Concert. The library staff and all children involved with the 2002 reading program would like to give a special thanks to The Friends of the Williamson Public Library for their ongoing efforts which made many of these programs possible.

The Kraft Shack will have its 14th Annual Kraft Karnival on Saturday, September 7 from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shack on 7070 Ridge Rd. East. There are all kinds of crafts you can make . If you purchase your tickets in advance, you can save. You can make a Wooden Gingerbread Cookie Hanging for $6, Dish Towel Witch for $5, wooden fall leaves (cute wall or door decoration) for $6. Sandy has crafts for all seasons to make. Sandy just returned from the ACCI show and has new ideas arriving daily. If you don't know about the new wooden dollar program, Sandy says to ask for more details. There will be a demonstration at noon to see how an Air Dry Clay Rose is made and you can make one for $2. Another demonstration will be at 2 p.m. to make a Clay Book Mark. Watching is free and if you'd like to make one, the cost will be $2. There is also a store-wide sale at the Kraft Shack - everything will be l0% off retail and larger discounts on many items. Also, don't miss the popular 80% off booth or $20 per bag sale. They will also have a 50% off booth this year. Sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to get craft supplies for those winter hobbies that keep us all busy during the cold months.

Thank you to everyone who sent info for me. Reading the column helps those who go South for the winter to keep up on what's happening while they're away. And you know when those colder temps come upon us, there will be many like Ralph and Betty Everdyke who will be heading for the warmer temps.

Have a nice Labor Day weekend, a great week, and I hope to hear from all of you soon. Write to me at

I, too, like to keep up with what's happening in Sodus.
