Pearl Harbor Ceremony in Lyons
Honored will be Pearl Harbor Vets: Frank Cimineri, Clyde; Angelo Varalli, Lyons and Howard Hance, Marion. Participants include County Commander Charles Schade, Jim Rooney, Karl Rhodes, the Marion Minutemen, and the Williamson Firing Squad. On an otherwise calm Sunday morning on December 7, 1941, the Japanese shocked the world by bombing the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This 'dastardly attack' was the turning point for America and for the War. Over 3500 Americans were killed or wounded in two waves of terror lasting two long hours. 350 aircraft were destroyed or damaged. All eight battleships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet were sunk or badly damaged - including the U.S.S. Arizona. On December 8, the nation was gathered around its radios to hear President Roosevelt deliver his Day of Infamy speech. That same day, Congress declared war on Japan. On December 11, Congress declared war on Germany.
