Wayne County budget okayed At public hearing last night, no one spoke in favor of, or against, the county's proposed spending plan for 2003. The Wayne County Board of Supervisors approved the $114.6 million budget, with two supervisors opposed - Jim Fabino (Lyons) and Dave Lyon (Palmyra). Town of Rose Supervisor Carm Pascarella was absent. Supervisors reduced the tax levy with $5.6 million in surplus funds, but the overall rate will still go up from $7.94 per $1,000 assessed valuation to $8.34. County tax rates vary from town to town, depending on equalization rates. Figures from Robert Diener, Director of Real Property Tax Services, show the county tax rate for the Village of Newark at $9.48, up about 99 cents from the 2002 rate. The town rate for Arcadia is also up 99 cents, from $8.16 to $9.15. Arcadia will pay the highest rate in the county and is hardest hit because it has the lowest equalization rate in the county. But it is Sodus residents who will see the biggest hike - their tax rate will rise by $1.11, putting them at $9.02 in the town and $9.28 in both villages (Sodus and Sodus Point). The lowest rate in the county will be for those residents of the Town of Rose ($8.06 per $1000). Town of Marion residents will be at $8.07. Town of Lyons residents will see an increase in their county tax bills - their rate is up from $7.60 to $8.19; in the Village, it will rise from $7.95 to $8.53. Both up about 60 cents per $1,000. A summary of this year's budget, and tax rates for each town, are available from our County Index.
