Lyons student to visit Middle East

On January 10, Lyons High School senior Bill Hummel will depart on a 10-day fact-finding mission to the Middle East. Hummel will be traveling with a delegation of 10 peacekeepers to meet with officials and citizens about the current crises in the region and, specifically, about the plight of Palestinian people and the possibility for a just peace.

The delegation will spend time in Jordan, visiting a Palestinian refugee camp, and will travel on to Jerusalem. The travelers hope to visit Bethlehem.

This is Hummel's second visit to the Middle East. He traveled with a peace delegation in February 1999. His senior research paper, 'Israel's Injustices Against Palestinians,' won the 2002 Lyons HS Benchmark Award for excellence.

Hummel has spoken at community and church gatherings about his experience and observations in Israel/Palestine and participated in a panel discussion on the situation in the Middle East at the University of Scranton.

He is editor-in-chief of the Lyons school newspaper, Mane Event. He plans to attend Brown University to major in International and Middle Eastern studies.

He is the son of the Rev. Cynthia Huling Hummel and Jon Hummel.
