Auld Lang Syne - The custom of singing Auld Lang Syne at midnight on New Year's Eve is the remnant of a broader custom of ending all parties with the song. Often with the participants joining hands in a circle. This larger custom originated in the British Isles around the end of the 18th century. It was particularly (and originally) popular in Scotland, because the plaintive lyrics of the song were written in 1788 by Scotland's national folk poet, Robert Burns; the Burns version was first printed in the song collection Scott's Musical Museum, published in 1796, the year of his death. Burns himself claimed that he took down the basics from 'an old man's singing.' In the Scots dialect it means 'old long since' or 'the good old days.'

Grandson, Chris Spittal from Philadelphia, visited with Don and Mary Spittal last weekend.
