Worskshop for Literacy Volunteer tutors Often times people will talk about issues and concerns surrounding their community but are unsure of how they can bring about a positive change. It is estimated that in Wayne County alone there are 28,000 adults who are functionally illiterate, that is, they cannot read well enough to successfully function in their everyday lives. Imagine the impact this statistic has on your community. It is the mission of Literacy Volunteers to provide free instruction in reading and writing to any adult who wishes to improve his/her reading skills. This is accomplished by providing one-to-one instruction on a regular, weekly basis. Please consider becoming a Literacy Volunteer Tutor. By sharing your skill and joy of reading with individuals from your community, you can open opportunities not previously available to them and create positive change LV Wayne will be offering a workshop for new Tutors on the Saturdays of February 23, March 2, and March 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wayne County Action Program facilities on Montezuma Street in Lyons. The workshop is free, although it is recommended that participants purchase Literacy Volunteers of America's Tutoring Guide at a cost of $15. LV Wayne presently has many people waiting for Tutors in all areas of the county. For information on becoming a certified LV Tutor, call Sandy Scheibel at 946.5333.
