The Doris Day Animal Foundation and the Humane Society of Wayne County named February 26 as Spay Day. The Humane Society of Wayne County will hold a drawing and several lucky pets will receive a free spay or neuter.

To enter your pet in the drawing, call the shelter at 946.3389 or stop by at 1475 County House Road in Lyons.

Since 1995, humane Americans have been responsible for altering over 1.5 million cats, dogs, rabbits and other animals during Spay Day USA, the Doris Day Animal Foundation's national day of action to end pet overpopulation. As a result, millions of surplus animal births have been prevented, reducing tire number of animals killed in shelters each year.

Did you know that spaying and neutering is vital to your pet's overall well-being? Altered animals are less likely to wander, and altering reduces or eliminates the risk of certain types of cancers. Spaying and neutering often eliminates undesirable behavior such as fighting or spraying.

Deadline is 4 p.m. on Feb. 25.

If you have a pet spayed or neutered during the month of February or March 2002 be sure to notify the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF) to be entered into the Every Spay/Neuter Counts!

Five winners will receive a $100 PETsMart Gift Certificate.

Donating vet services are: Lyons Veterinary Clinic, Phelps Veterinary Hospital, Sodus Veterinary Clinic, Palmyra Animal Hospital, Walworth Animal Hospital, County Line Animal Hospital, Fairport Animal Hospital, Fairview Veterinary Hospital, Williamson Animal Hospital, Newark Veterinary Hospital and Macedon Veterinary Care.

Many private individuals are also supporting Spay Day 2002.
