Lady Reds capture BB basketball crown

The Newark girls made their first visit to the Blue Cross Arena a special one, winning the Class BB Sectional championship.

They defeated Pittsford Mendon 39-38 in a nail-biter on February 27.

Senior Angie Perillo was named Class BB Most Valuable Player, scoring 11 points and adding four rebounds.

The 19-4 Reds held a 12-9 lead after one period. Mendon's Lindsay Bartholf scored five points giving Mendon a 17-14 halftime lead. Danielle Bleecker added six points.

In the third period the teams bounced back and forth. Tiffany Collins tied the game at 25 with a hook shot. In the fourth quarter, Bartholf tied the game at 29 and then gave Mendon the 31-29 lead. Collins tied the game at 31 with an offensive rebound put-back.

Bartholf scored to make it 33-31, then Collins made a shot and it was 33-33. With 1:51 left in the game Sarah Wlodarczyk hit two foul shots to tie it at 35. Mendon scored, and Amanda Baker tied the game by making two foul shots with 1:06 left on the clock.

Mendon took the lead for the last time as Bartholf hit one of two foul shots making it 38-37.

Danielle Garcia Coach Diane Abrey called a time out setting up the Reds' final shot with 22 seconds left. Garcia missed a baseline jumper; after a missed shot by Baker, Collins grabbed the rebound and made the layup.

With eight seconds left, Bartholf took the ball the length of the court but missed a five-foot jumper.

Wlodarczyk made the All Tournament Team, scoring seven points. Collins also made the All Tourney Team. She kept the Reds in the game with 12 points and ten rebounds. Baker added six rebounds and four points. Newark held the 35-30 edge in rebounding.

This is the Lady Reds' first Sectional title since 1984.

Last Saturday, Newark posted a 57-53 semifinal win over Honeoye Falls-Lima. Newark built a second-half lead over the Cougars. Perillo was tough down the stretch, scoring nine points in the closing minutes.

Newark led 31-24 at halftime. Wlodarczyk scored 10 points in the first half with Collins adding nine and Perillo scoring six.

Newark held on to a 43-35 lead after three periods. HFL ended the season as the Number 2 seed, with a 19-3 record.

Perillo scored 18 points and 10 rebounds. Wlodarczyk had three treys and a total of 15 points. Baker pulled down nine rebounds, Garcia had nine assists, while Collins scored nine points.
