learn more about it Raising pheasants is youth project

While snow may still be covering the ground, plans for spring programs are underway at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office. One such program is the very popular one-day old pheasant-rearing program.

This program sponsored by the Department of Environmental Conservation, places day-old chicks in foster homes for 6 to 8 weeks. After the rearing period the pheasants are released to the wild. This program is enjoyable, challenging and teaches youth responsible behavior. The released pheasants also offer fall hunting opportunity and people enjoy seeing and hearing pheasants.

To receive day-old pheasant chicks, youths 8 to 18 must be registered in the Wayne County 4-H Program. Registration is $10. Chicks can be ordered in increments of 25 by calling Kimberly Gardner at 331.8415 or stopping by Cornell Cooperative Extension at 1581 Rt. 88 N. Newark.

Chicks are expected to arrive the first week in June. All orders and enrollment must be into the Kimberly Gardner by March 14.
