King Day celebration in Sodus

Rev. Norvil Goff'Let the dream remain alive' - said Frank Comer, in his opening prayer at ceremonies Monday afternoon.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration was held yesterday in Sodus. Comer and dozens of people marched from the Sodus High School to Third United Methodist Church, where an emotion-filled service followed.

The Earl Greene family sang Lift Every Voice, the Black National Anthem.

Herbert Bowman and Janice Comer led the afternoon program with the theme, 'Remembering Our God.'

Dr. Martin Luther King Good Citizen Awards were presented to five youths .... Awards also went to John Patterson and the Ghertners - Dr. John, Nancy and Robin.

member of 'Spiritual Revivers' Keynote speaker was the Rev. Norvil Goff (pictured) of Rochester, and the President of the NAACP.

Students today read the words of Dr. King, listen to his speeches, sing songs in his honor and study his role in American history. He was assassinated in April 1968 in Memphis.

Music was provided by soloists Michele Cabarris (Amazing Grace) and the gospel group 'Spiritual Revivers.' They will play Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Lyons Community Center. Children under 12 are admitted free, with others paying $3 for admission.
