St. Michael School will build playground

In 2004, St. Michael School in Newark will celebrate 50 years of Catholic education in Newark.

'A playground has always been desired at the school. The opportunity came to light this year because of the involvement of some dedicated supporters and parents,' said retiring principal Kathy Peters.

The playground will be named the Snyder-Fitch Playground in memory of two gentlemen who were supporters of the school, church and the idea of a playground for the children.

The playground will be located outside the south side of St. Michael's and will be designed for children in preschool - 4th grade. It is being purchased from Universal Play Systems (of Rochester), which manufacture Little Tikes toys.

Helping the school with the project are Chase-Pitkin in Newark and DAS Sand & Gravel in Arcadia. DAS will donate the gravel.

The playground is being financed through fund raising and donations. Donations can be made by purchasing a part of the equipment or by buying a square foot of the playground for $15 a square foot.

People are donating money in honor or in memory of friends and family.

The Playground Committee has been selling candy bars and ceramic patriotic plates and will have car washes at the school during the summer.

The playground will be installed with the help of an engineer from Universal Play Systems and with volunteers from the school and the community. The plan is to finish the fund raising this summer and complete installation before September.

Questions regarding the playground, or donations to it, can be directed to the school at 331.2297 or to committee member, Robyn Stack at 398.0956.
