Happenings June 28, 1912: A new croquet ground has been prepared, beside the Grange Hall, by the sports. It will run in hot competition to the one on the Brewster Place. There are enough men of leisure, however, to keep both running over time. Dick Murphy continues to be a hospital patient at Newark. Jay Milliman is recuperating after recent surgery. Jim and Chris Steurrys of Williamson announce the birth of their son, Jacob Robert on July 5. Proud grandparents are Nelson and Anna Steurrys of Marion and Ed and Sue Conliser of Allegany, NY. Hoe: Gardening tool whose name derives from the fact that when its blade is stepped on, its handle delivers a sharp rap to the gardener's brow, at which point he cries, 'HO!' or some other colorful expression. A note to Jacob Spenser: 'I'm pleased to hear that you enjoy the Marion Happenings.' Lately though, I guess everyone is on vacation, cause I've not had too much news from the folks around here. The weather is livable. The small ice cream cone at 'The Bistro' is almost too big! At the Museum, I have plans for the big room which was the court room, upstairs and hope to have it open for the public at our festival in September. The third cook book which supports the Marion American Legion Baseball team is now available for $2. The coach and supporters are trying to raise the more than $1000 that is needed for the umpires needed for the home games. This is that so any of Marion's Youth can play without paying a fee. A grand bunch of youngsters! 'Kids in Sports Stay Out of Courts' You will have to visit the library, now in the former Grange building. It is elegant! I hope the time and funds spent on this endeavor will be similarly channeled toward the Marion Museum. More news later ... Mark your calendars! July 21, Miller's Mills, Sundae Run and Road Race and Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social.
