WCHS events planned for Peppermint Days The Wayne County Historical Society Old Jail Museum, 21 Butternut Street, will offer several activities during Lyons Peppermint Days.

On July 13, the Museum will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A guided free tour of the Museum will begin at 11. The Museum is housed in what was once the Wayne County Jail. From 1854 through 1961, the cells of the jail held the infamous, like convicted murder William Fee (the only person ever to be hanged in the Wayne County Jail) and notorious train robber, Oliver Curtis Perry, and the more common criminals, train riders, drunks and petty thieves.

In 1962, the empty jail and attached sheriff's home became home to the County Historical Society and was filled with permanent and temporary exhibits that display examples of life in early Wayne County.

A free guided tour through the Barn Galleries begins at 1. Exhibits include a well-stocked general store, the only remaining horse bridge from the original Erie Canal, early farm equipment, a collection of antique license plates, and maple sugaring, coopering, ice harvesting and leatherworking exhibits.

'Locks and Legends,' a 45-minute walking tour that includes Lock #27, begins at the Museum at 1 p.m. The tour guide will recount a brief history of the canal and its impact on the growth of Wayne County and tell stories that bring the canal era alive. There is a $2 fee for this tour.

Refreshments, donated by the WCHS Board of Directors and Zappia Vending Service, Inc., will be served to guests.
