Newark School budget vote Tuesday

The vote on the Newark School District budget proposal will be at Newark High School on Tuesday, June 25 from 9 to 9.

The spending plan has been reduced to $35,029,021, after the original plan was rejected by voters.

The estimated school tax levy will be $10,081,252.

The district reports that the current public school enrollment is 2722, and it's expected to be 2711 for 2002-2003.

Dr. Louis Jasper said the school board and the administration had 'worked hard to be responsive and respectful' of the situation in the community. He said a lot of the economic constraints on school districts were created by the state legislature.

BOE member Jeff Snow said making cuts was better than the contingency budget alternative. He said he hoped those who voiced concerns about the economy, will realize that a contingency budget would hurt those who have to buy school supplies.

Board member Russ Harris, who throughout the meeting voiced concerns about cutting too much, would have been more comfortable cutting $70,000 or $72,000 out of the proposed spending, not the $96,000.

New board member John Vair says the board 'had responded to the community members who are feeling a financial burden.'

He said the recent budget defeat by such a narrow margin should be a wake-up call for people who assume the budget will pass.
