Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

flowersHasn't it been nice outside for the first week of the kids' summer vacation? (Of course I'm trying to still get things done - like veterinarian appointments. I couldn't do without the kids help! Sarah needs a vet that makes house calls. She just doesn't like to sit down in the backseat. You know the type - head out the window, barking at everything that moves.)

I received a nice e-mail from Jacob Spencer. Jake is currently serving in the U.S. Navy, with the Seabees. The Seabees are the construction arm of the Navy. They go in with or right behind the Marines. Jacob is from Marion, so he reads both my Missing Sodus and Mrs. Adriaansen's Marion Happenings column every week. He says it helps him not miss home so much. He asked me to please pass on his thanks to Mrs. A. and to everyone back home.

When you get the chance please send him a note: blackknight_92@yahoo.com

It's hard to be so far away from home. He, and many others, are overseas to protect us. You're all doing a great job and we appreciate it.

I trust that the Sodus Point Firemen's Carnival is in full swing. Rides will open tonight at 6 and the big parade is at 7. Tomorrow at flowers 9 a.m., there's the Sink-a-boat at the County Park, then tomorrow night - the Wall of Fire and fireworks. There'll be Waterball Sunday morning, a ride matinee, music and chicken BBQ from 1-4 p.m. Head to the Point for all the fun.

It's also graduation weekend. Congratulations to all the grads, and special kudos to: Sodus Valedictorian John Michael Whitcomb and Salutatorian Karen Miller; Williamson Valedictorian Zackery Knowlden and Salutatorian Chelsea Manahan. Everyone is quite proud, I'm sure. (And Shawna Pike is in the Sodus Top Ten! )

More fun: Don't forget the Kiddie Parade is at Sodus Point on Saturday. The Pre-judging is at l0:30 with the parade begins at ll. The parade will end at the Lighthouse. Pre-judging will be at the Sodus Community Center. (We were in quite a few of the Kiddie Parades in Sodus - it's amazing to see all the creative ideas some people come up with for the floats.) It's a lot of fun. (Start this activity when the kids are little because they aren't into being in the kiddie parades much past 15... just kidding.)

Then, before you hear from me again, it will be the Fourth of July! That's always a big day at the Point. Breakfast at the Lighthouse will be served from 7 to 11 a.m., and the 5K Runners get a discount. Breakfast this year is being sponsored by Sodus Recreation. Then the Gap Mangione Big Band plays the afternoon concert. (Click to check the schedule for summer Lighthouse Concerts and please note the new time this year - 2 p.m. instead of 3.)

Happy July Birthdays to Jimmy Malone (who is in his prime) and to Pam Dolan.

flowers After all the excitement coming for the next several days, you have to plan for coming events. Read all about them next week: Bubblemania at the Williamson Library; movies at the Sodus Point Ball Park; Sodus Chamber of Commerce events.... It's going to be a great summer! (Just leave the blanket and lawn chairs in the trunk?)

Have a great week, and a safe and happy Fourth of July!
