Musical at Newark opens March 8
Newark High School will present The Sound of Music, March 8 and 9 at 8 p.m., March 10 at 2 p.m. Senior Citizens
As the shadows of tyranny spread over Europe during the 1930's, aspiring nun Maria Rainer becomes the governess to the children of Austrian naval officer Captain von Trapp, only to discover her heart's true vocation: To rejoice in the sunlight of laughter, song and romantic love. Pictured kneeling is Maria (Sarah Chilson), talking to Mother Abbess (Bethany Steel). Maria, a high-spirited postulant at Nonnberg Abby in pre-War Austria, is sent by her Mother Abbess to act as governess to the seven children of naval captain and widower Georg von Trapp ... and in the process, to discover whether she is truly suited for a life of religion. Days of music and filled with life, soon endear her to the children and despite the initial resistance, to their father. Maria flees the household, but she finds herself falling in love with her employer, who is already engaged to the socialite, Baroness Elsa Schraeder. But Elsa, realizing that the captain will never love her, renounces the engagement, leaving him free to acknowledge his growing love for Maria. No sooner is the couple married, than the captain is called up to be re-enlisted in the German Navy. Using their performance at the Salzburg Music festival, set up by uncle Max, the family eludes the watchful Nazi officers and escapes into the mountains of Switzerland. Directed by Damian Koviak, with musical direction by Jean Bendix, this production coincides with the 64th anniversary of the Anschluss, the German invasion of Austria, that figures so predominately in the plot of the musical. Tickets are $5 advance, $6 at the door and may be purchased by calling the High School main office, 332.3242. This production is a participant in The Rochester Broadway Theatre League's STARS OF TOMORROW program, which celebrates the excellence of the Arts at the high school level.
