Cemetery art to be topic

History at Noon at the Wayne County Historical Society will be held on March 20 at the Museum on 21 Butternut Street, Lyons. The speaker will be Andrea Evangelist, Executive Director of the Society, who will talk on Cemetery Art and Symbolism.

Family research is an engrossing pastime that often starts out small and then becomes all-consuming. The reason for this might be that this is one hobby that gives the average person a chance to become a detective. The research involved in tracing ones' roots eventually leads to cemetery visits and headstone reading.

As more and more researchers venture into cemeteries to seek out ancestral graves, more and more questions arise about the meanings of the artwork and symbols found on the tombstones. Evangelist will explain the meanings behind frequently-seen cemetery symbols.

The lecture will begin at 12:10 p.m. and attendees may bring a bag lunch if desired. Beverages will be provided by Zappia Vending, Inc. and dessert will be provided by the Society. Registration for this free event is required, as seating space is limited.
