Happenings Marion American Legion Roast Beef Dinner at the Legion Home - Friday, May 10 at 4:30 p.m. 'Problems are opportunities in work clothes.' Those returning from the sunny south include Rod and Helen Adriaansen and Dennis and Loretta VanStrien. Lillian Cherrier on Sunset Drive is home after a hospital stay. Gord and I just returned from an Isabelle Bushart bus trip to the Lancaster, PA area. We were with a group of 50 who enjoyed the lovely weather and gorgeous Dogwood blooms, although they had predicted snow. We were privileged to see the outstanding production of Daniel at the Sight and Sound theater, followed by a tasty, sufficient supper at the Good and Plenty restaurant. On Wednesday we had a guided tour of the Amish country, where we saw children on their way to school dressed in traditional outfits. Many of the farmers were working in the fields with up to seven teams of horses or mules. Then on to West Chester for our tour of the huge operation of QVC. Quite an operation! On the way home we were happy to partake of an elaborate dinner at the historical Lackawanna station, located in the Hotel Scranton. Our trusty bus driver was Dick Swarthout who helped to make the excursion so enjoyable. Now, if it has been a spell since you traveled with the Busharts, you may wish to call 926.7764 and get your reservations in for the Jell-O museum, D and R Depot restaurant, the Cobblestone museum in LeRoy and Western New York on May 9. Or the June 28 'Old Library' Western Hoedown in Olean, with its quilting and butterfly exhibits, craft booths, plus western pig roast with food all day, plus a Wild Bill show. July 11 - Cooperstown Rail Buffet lunch, Baseball Hall of Fame and more! Aug. 1 Maple Syrup; Aug. 22 - Thousand Islands September 8-14, Myrtle Beach with three shows, sightseeing and shopping. On April 22, I entertained the retired country school teachers for a luncheon. We had a grand time together, but missing Ina Benton who was at the Newark hospital. I tried out a recipe I plan to include in the next Marion Legion Baseball Cookbook and all comments were good. It is called My Father's Lemon Pie: 4 eggs, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 tbl. flour, 1 tbl. white cornmeal, 1/4 cup milk, 1/4 cup melted butter, 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice, rind from 1 lemon, 1 unbaked pie shell. Beat eggs with sugar, mix in flour and cornmeal, add remaining ingredients, pour into pie shell, 375 degrees for about 40 minutes, cool before slicing; pie can be frozen. Mother's Day is on the way! A Marion coverlet would make a lovely gift. Did you know that tulips are the only flower that continue to grow after they have been cut. To prolong the life of cut flowers from your garden, display them in a cool place, out of direct sunlight, also change the water daily, adding 1 tsp. sugar and about 1/4 tsp. lemon juice. The school board and administration invites senior citizens to the MAY 16 senior citizens celebration. Dinner begins at 6:15 p.m. in the School Cafeteria followed by the Junior High School Vocal Music Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Reservations can be made through the Marion Senior Citizens group or by calling Warren Bushart, director of food service, at 926.2409. May 3, 1913: AJ Sherwood, while ploughing recently, lost a bill book from his pocket containing about $300. After spending several hours at the same work, he was successful in finding the money.
