Missing Sodus
By Melissa White
mgoodcooke@yahoo.com

I'm beginning to think I should change the column to 'Missing Spring.' (I didn't miss it, did I? I started to put the winter coats away and got them right back out.)

Sandy of the Kraft Shack is in Arizona for a visit, so she's warm enough I'm sure. Ralph Everdyke and his wife Betty are on the their way back North and should arrive next week. (I hope they are bringing some warm clothes.) And speaking of warm weather, Susie Hooper who now lives in Florida, will have a birthday on May 8.

Jim Colucci Thanks to Al Dobbin for the photo of Jim Colucci - famous Sodus barber who also writes a column for our friends at the Sun & Record. Doesn't he look happy?

News From the Kraft Shack: Another fun project will be in the making Tuesday, May l4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This one sounds really cute - you make a Spring Water Pump. It has the look of an old fashion water pump complete with the bucket and decorated with flowers, butterflies and other cute things. You will stain the wooden pump then decorate it for summer. $29 includes all and please remember to register in advance.

Rob Wahl is in Oman and said it is l20 degrees there and should reach l30 in June. Rob sent me some great pictures to share with everyone. Here's a little of what he had to say:

I am a member of the Sodus community and a Technology Teacher at Sodus High School. I have always lived in Sodus or at least within driving distance of Sodus. Most of my Family has always lived in CAMEL Sodus...very few have ever moved away and when they did move away they always came back to good old Sodus. I am also an enlisted member of the New York Air National Guard, and I am writing this letter today from the other side of the world (the country of Oman) because as of the 28 of February 2002, I was called to Active duty for up to six months. I guess the reason I am writing this is because I miss all of the people and the community of Sodus and I wanted to let everyone back home know that I made it here safely and that I think of them often, and that I will be home as soon as my job here is done. I have really enjoyed reading your column on the internet.

The weather here is always warm and sunny, has been around 120 this week, and it isn't even summer yet! pop can I am told we will be hitting upper 120's to 130 during June! I guess we will try to stay out of the sun as much as possible here. Definitely no chance of snow! I am attaching a couple photos from my experience here. You can put them in the paper if  you want? A description of the pictures... #1 The first camel that I saw while over here in the desert, they walk right down the side of the road...sometimes right down the center line! #2 Its a good thing that we as Americans have logos on our products because if you can't camp read Arabic you wouldn't know we have Pepsi! #3 A picture of our camp (Tent City) Hope that you enjoy the  pictures. I always look forward to your column... The pictures from NYC were great...another reminder of why I am over here!

Don't forget... when you get the chance, he'd love to hear from home. You can write to him at

Isn't it amazing we can see pictures and communicate with someone so far away! Thanks Rob, for the great pictures and information. The Middle East is so different from what we are familiar with, and through Rob we get a small view of it.

Carol Moysey who lives in Poughkeepsie now would like everyone to know about the beautiful things you can see when you visit her area. In Poughkeepsie, there is a 700-vendor Flea Market at the Stormville Airport the last Saturday and Sunday of each month. Lots of food, antiques, junk, new items, crafts... The Hudson River Boat Cruises are fantastic and head up the Hudson to the Eisenhower Center and then back again. Some cruises have meals and dancing. Some are day liners and others leave the area at suppertime and return late. If you drive up Route 9 to Hyde Park, the Roosevelt Home, the Vanderbilt Mansion and the Mills Mansion can be toured. Also  in Hyde Park is the home of Mrs. Roosevelt, called Val-kil. It is relatively small but charming. In Rhinbeck, NY is the Country Fair the end of August. Also one can visit the Aerodrome for a Sunday afternoon and watch the planes do their maneuvers. It is quite something to watch. These are just a few things to see.

We are so fortunate to live in the computer age - able to receive information and keep in touch so easily. Thanks to everyone who write, and if you have any info you'd like to share, send it along to me at

mgoodcooke@yahoo.com

I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great week, and remember - while we anxiously await the warm temps, Rob is hoping for a cool breeze.
