Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

We were out and about in Wayne County just the other day. The water at Sodus Point was so pretty with the sun Memorial Day shining on it. I would have gotten some great pictures if I could operate my camera better... another reason I must come back. It was pretty and a little sad looking over the sand - it wasn't long ago we were sitting on the beach watching the kids venture out to the water. (My kids never braved actually getting in.) I remembered feeding the ducks with the kids while I listened to the water gently coming to shore. (I sound homesick, don't I?)

I chatted with Becky Clark the other day. She told me all about her trip to Mars - of course, the trip to the Planetarium was much closer than the actual planet. The Clarks have a friend visiting from Germany for the next month. I hope he has a good trip. Alice and Doug will be celebrating their anniversary on Saturday, May 25.

There is a lot going on again in Wayne County - The Sodus Point Firemen will be having a chicken BBQ on Sunday (May 26) at the Fire Hall. On Monday, The Sodus Memorial Day Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. (If you're in the parade, line up at 9 a.m. in the High School's student parking lot.)

On Thursday (May 30), the Farmers' Market will be open at l:30 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Newark. Then on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday - it's time for the Fairville Field Days. And, speaking of Fairville, The Apple Shed will be re-opening for the season in June.

The Sodus Point Fire Dept. will have its Annual Pot of Gold fundraiser on June 1 - doors open at 3, and dinner is served 5-7 p.m. Ontario Summerfest is June l and 2 (and Kate Eichenberger is visiting Australia).

The next Sodus Chamber of Commerce meeting will be June 6 at 6 p.m. at Nick's Family Restaurant. Call to make reservations no later then June 3 (Alice Irwin 483.6104).

Mark Your Calendars: Sodus Bay Yacht Club's Antique Boat Show is June 8 at the Yacht Club on Irwin St. at the Point. On exhibit will be canoes, rowboats, runabouts, racing boats and sailboats. Exhibitors will be members of various Antique and Classic Boat Societies, as well as area enthusiasts and restorers. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and boats will be exhibited on land and water. The Show will culminate in a Parade of Boats and awards ceremony. Food and beverages available on the grounds and the Club will be open to the public for dinner, with seating starting at 5 p.m. Also, local artists will be exhibiting and selling their work, including watercolor and historical prints.

If you'd like to show your boat, contact Ethan and Alice Irwin at irwins@rochester.rr.com or please call 315.483.6104. Registration fees are $10 on land and $15 in the water. We went years ago and had fun watching the boats - in fact, there was one that was a car and a boat. He came out of the water and drove away... pretty handy - no towing, no docking - just head for the road. I remember the year Father Dave Faraone of the Church of Epiphany was blessing the boats.

And June 8 is also the date of the Community Garage Sale at the Point.

If you have a fun event, special dates, recipe or something you'd like to have added to the column, please let me know
