Assessing the damage

Teams of code enforcement officers and inspectors from the State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) continue this afternoon to tour Newark and Arcadia to view property damage from Wednesday's rainstorm.

Newark Code Enforcement Officer Mark Peake and Arcadia Officer Chuck Verkey are being assisted not only by SEMO, but have been joined by officials from Sodus, Lyons, Perinton, Williamson, Brockport, Geneva, Marion and Penfield.

By the time they took a break for lunch, they handed at least 100 Damage Assessment Forms to Arcadia Town Clerk Diane Allerton. Click here to view the form that officers must complete.

Meanwhile, in the village, property owners continue to clear water from their basements, and try to dry out. One of the hardest hit homes was on Pine Boulevard - the family is busy emptying the contents of their finished basement into a dumpster, and have been told that they will not be compensated by their homeowner's insurance policy.

Arcadia Supervisor Joe DeSanto advises people who have a problem with their insurance company to call 1-800-339-1759 for advice. DeSanto warns that you may have to 'hold' the line for quite awhile, but that someone will eventually be available to answer your questions.
