I've had a request for the recipe for Orange Slice Cookies. 2 cups flour, divided 1 lb. orange slice candies, cut fine 1.5 cups brown sugar 1/2 cup margarine 2 eggs 1 tsp. soda 1/2 cup coconut

Put 1/2 cup flour on cut orange slices so they don't stick together. Mix sugar, margarine, and eggs. Add 1 1/2 cups flour with soda, coconut, and orange slices. Make in balls, press down with fork. ( When doubling recipe, use only one pound orange slices.) 350 degrees, 10 minutes.

Home Canning

By Joan Stephen

Years ago when I was ambitious

and it came toward the fall of the year

I would be at work in the kitchen

Amid tomatoes and peaches and pears.

Hot steam would rise to the ceiling

And I would be red in the face.

There were spices and ladles on tables;

And kettles and jars every place.

The fragrance varied with product;

Whether fruit or hot chili sauce

All put together with gusto;

I was both the worker and boss.

As the labor of canning continued

Intoxicating scents filled the air

And we were prepared for a winter

With cupboards and shelves never bare.

Later when the snowflakes were falling

We savored the food in each can

By then all the toil was forgotten

As we enjoyed the aromas again.
