silo Second life for old Arcadia silo

On a recent warm day in November, nine Amish men came to Mil-Benski Farm at 6769 Miller Rd., Arcadia. They came prepared to take down the cement stave silo (14 x 40 feet) and rebuild it again on the Clyde Marengo Farm owned by one of the men. They hired a truck load of sand to be dumped at the base of the silo.

After the silo roof was removed, each stave was lifted off and tossed down onto the pile of sand where the staves were picked up and put onto pallets on a flatbed truck. By late afternoon, the silo was fully taken down.

This was quite a feat. There were over 715 staves and each weighed 70 lbs.

silo The silo was built in March 1956 for Kenneth Miller at a cost of $1850. It was used many years by the Millers in caring for their dairy cows.

Mil-Benski Farm was formed as a partnership in 1979 by Kenneth and Gertrude Miller, Dan and Edith Benedict, Steve and Linda Benedict, Bob and Becky Bialaszewski. The silo was used by them for several years while they kept dairy cows.
