Lyons Heritage Society will discuss roses
There will be a brief business meeting followed by a program given by Jill Herendeen. Herendeen, a landscape architect, will present a slide show that will give the viewers an idea of what sort of roses were around when the village of Lyons was young. Members might be interested to learn that the first Hybrid Tea Rose 'La France' wasn't marketed until 1887, although the hero, circa 1660, of 'The Man in the Iron Mask' hands his paramour a rose that looks it won the Queen of Show at the latest American Rose Society Show. Herendeen hopes attendees will bring questions and maybe even cuttings. If unable to attend, she suggestsa study of the 19th century works of William Paul, Thomas Rivers, Robert Bruist and Robert Lindley, as well as the much more recent works of Graham Thomas and Thomas Christopher. The University of Rochester has a fine collection of the original of these books from Ellwanger and Barry, Rochester nurseryman of well over 100 years ago. The public is invited.
