'Never grow a wishbone where your backbone ought to be.' (C.Paddleford) A cure for crickets: One hedge apple (Osage orange) in the garage and one in the basement will discourage crickets when they become a nuisance in the fall. The Osage orange is an ornamental moraceous tree with fruit resembling an orange with warts. The tree is often used to form decorative hedges or fence rows, hence the more common name, hedge apples. November 8, 1913: Pipes for the water works are laid on nearly every street in town. The cement reservoir on Prospect Hill is nearly completed and there is a good prospect of the work of installing a water system before cold weather. Five Marion students have been selected to participate in the NYS School Music Association, Zone 2, Junior High Area All State Music Festival. The students selected as members of the band are Audrey Tuma, Flute and Joshua Messenger, French horn. Both Josh and Audrey were selected on the basis of the ratings they received at last year's Wayne County Solo Festival. Students selected as members of the chorus are Meredith Morse, Cara Thomas and Jayson Keys. Chorus members are selected on the basis of teacher recommendations. Congratulations to these students who will be representing Marion Central School! Gord and I and a bus full of folks traveled to New York City last week. We saw so many things and places. Our home base was the New Yorker Hotel, but we kept on the go most of the time. We enjoyed performances of the play The Producers and loved the Christmas Show at the Radio City Music Hall with the Rockettes. Such precision! We dined at Jennifer's Restaurant and at Domenico's. We stopped at South Street Seaport on our return from Ellis Island and boating around the Statue of Liberty, as time was of the essence. We had time to shop, of course! We spent a little time at Ground Zero, taking some pictures and trying to imagine how it was before the terrible disaster. We had a tour of Central Park. We visited the beautiful Cathedral of St. Patrick and were overwhelmed with the renovated Grand Central Terminal, where I had the chance to get some Junior's Cheesecake. Our group leaders were Harry and Jeanne Lewis with the Port Gibson Travelers. (Be watching for their itinerary of upcoming tours and trips and climb aboard the bus for a wonderful and enlightening time!) The Holiday Open House at the Marion Museum will be December 7 from 10 to 2. Featured will be Santa Clauses from around the world. Refreshments will be served. Call 926.4436 if another day and time would be more convenient for you. Need a household gift, a fireplace or accessory, a Christmas decoration or collectible? Then go to the Williamson Hardware store, they have it all!
