Missing Sodus

The kids seem to be back in the flow. My daughter is now in Middle School and that's always a big transition. Kids seem to need the routine of school as do the parents many of whom look forward to getting back into their own scheme of things.

Ralph and Betty Everdyke were set to leave for the sunny south this week. When they get to Florida and get connected again, he can keep us up to date on how sunny and warm Florida is and what fun outings they are having while we are all up here hibernating. Actually I like to hear about what others are doing while I'm looking out the window at blowing snow. (Oh gosh, did I say 'snow' out loud ?) Have a safe trip down, you two. (My computer is going to be pretty quiet without all the jokes Ralph sends to me on a daily basis.) From what I understand, quite a few people from Newark head down to Florida for the winter months and meet up with Betty and Ralph there.

There are a lot of October birthdays... in fact, one on Halloween itself. (Seems like yesterday I was talking to Melanie about all the cool plans she had for the party.) Jeremy Pike is (or should I say was) a Halloween baby. Janet Clark had a birthday on October 3, as well as Diane Phillips. And Sue Lowenguth has a birthday on the 24th. Happy Birthday everyone.

I received another letter from the little girl we sponsor through the CFCA, which we joined while at the Church of the Epiphany a few years ago. It's fun to see her handwritten letter even though I can't read a bit of it (good thing it's translated). Both my kids are taking Spanish, so one of them should eventually be able to read it to me the way Isabel actually wrote it. Do you sponsor a child through the CFCA? I know many people signed up. Please send me some info about your child. Our little girl is from Guatemala.

The scenic 1 1/2 hour train rides to see the fall foliage began Sunday, September the 29. (Since I was vacationing, I couldn't remind you about that one.) You can go Saturdays, October 5 and 12, and Sundays, October 6, 13, 20 and 27 at ll:30 a.m. or at 2:15 p.m. The train departs from Rotterdam Road in Sodus. Adults $11, Seniors $10, children 3-l5 $7, under 3 ride free. Discounts are available for groups of 15 or more adults. 1940's revisited day will be Sunday, October 6 (sounds like fun) and the Halloween Express is Sunday, October 27 - dress up in costume on that day. To order tickets you can visit www.rochnrhs.org Any unsold tickets go on sale at 10:30 a.m. on the day of the trips at the train in Sodus.

At the Kraft Shack, don't forget there is painting with Larry on Saturday, October 5 from l0 a.m. to 2 p.m. Two nights a week, Monday, October 7 and Wednesday, October 9 from 6:30 - 8:30, you can lean Theorem Painting. Jim Ryan will teach you how to paint a fruit Theorem. $22 includes all. Triple Pumpkins are at the Kraft Shack Tuesday, October 8 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. This trio is made from wood, painted like pumpkins, decorated with fall leaves. It can be arranged to hang or sit. $24 includes all. Please remember to pre-register for the classes and either pre-pay or put down a $l0 non-refundable deposit for the classes you sign up for. Hurry over there and sign up to make some really cool things for your house or to give as gifts.

ghost Also coming on weekends in October (sounds like a book title ) - Haunted Hayrides of Greater Rochester in Williamson, are coming to the DeFisher Farms. There are six major attractions and over 20 additional scenes throughout the trail. So, if you enjoyed the trip last year, this year there are new things for you. You can purchase your tickets at Wegmans. See your neighborhood store for details.

There are many wonderful clubs for students to join at the Sodus School. At the Intermediate school, there is the Chess Club. The 22nd annual Intermediate School Chess Tournament began in January with 108 Intermediate School students entered. After playing within grade levels, the top four players at each grade level competed for the school championship. The tournament concluded in June. The 2002: Brandon Butler, Tyler Baker and Tim Fratangelo. The tournament is sponsored by the Intermediate Student Council and organized by Mr. Lawrence. Congratulations to all.

If you have an event to share, special days, or have ideas on things you'd like to have added to the column, (also if you have information on how to keep a spider plant happy), please write to me

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Have a great week. I'm still wondering whether to get the sweaters out of storage, leave them where they are, or have both winter and summer things in the closet!
