Newark Garden Club recognizes Joey's On Friday, the Newark Garden Club met at Park Presbyterian Church and presented the 2002 Beautification Award to of Joey's Northside Grocery. The store is located on North Main, at the corner of Pearl Street. Rose and Joey Nicosia are pictured with (center) Ange DeJohn of the Garden Club. The Garden Club annually recognizes a business establishment which has done an outstanding landscape display at their place of business. Anne Crowley is president of Newark Garden Club. The Oct. 4 program was by Lin Williams from Celestial Surroundings, instructing on Feng Shui. Feng Shui are the Chinese words for 'wind and water' describing two essential elements that contribute to how space serves or hinders our sense of well-being. On October 4, 1998, Joey moved into his new store, across the street from his old one. Immediately, Rose, his mother, saw the possibilities for her landscaping abilities. An old tree, blocking the view to Main Street, was removed. Rose transplanted from her own garden, some to the corner at curb side, the some to the other on the side of the building. Plantings include sedum, red hot poker, miniature roses, begonias, moon plant, grasses, mums, annuals, etc. A row of Rose of Sharon has also been planted. You can view some pictures of Joey's landscape in the most recent Photo Gallery, and read more about Joey's in Friday's print edition of the Courier-Gazette.
