Fund Drive for County Humane Society
The mission is to provide a humane facility to shelter, feed and care for lost, unwanted, or abused domestic animals, and to provide humane education to the citizens of Wayne County. Funding comes from individual memberships, grants, donations, fundraising events, and bequests. The Humane Society cannot continue to rely solely on these avenues to cover the increasing costs of operating the Shelter. The Shelter opened its doors to dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and small domestic animals in October 1990. During the most recent five years of operation, an average of 1400 animals per year have been turned over to the Society; this figure includes 'owner turnover' animals, strays, feral animals, as well as animals that have been ill, injured or deemed to have been abused. It is expensive to run a shelter where domestic animals receive quality care and in which the public has confidence. The Humane Society of Wayne County does not receive funding directly from County taxes. The County provides a rent-free facility, grounds maintenance, and takes responsibility for necessary structural repairs. Improvements to the Shelter that will benefit the animals such as outdoor kennels and perimeter fencing are funded by grants from animal-oriented foundations. This is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Call the shelter at 315.946.3389 or visit www.hswaynepets.org
