'A Reason for Porching'
By Carolyn Adriaansen

house with big porch

Of course, it depends where you live, but almost any season is a 'Reason for 'Porching.'

It's SPRING! It's time to get out the stored furniture. White wicker chairs and a sofa with pillows for napping, padded rocking chairs and sometimes a swing. End tables hold the hot cups of leek soup with cheese muffins - or a delicious breakfast. Bright daffodils and stately tulips brighten the garden scene.

SUMMER. Where the days are hot and the evenings long. Ice cold lemonade served with slim, tasty cookies, freshly baked this morning before the heat of the day. Flowered pillows arranged for comfortable relaxing - wind chimes in the catalpa tree, a Boston fern hanging on a chain and a slight breeze wafting across our moist brow. Neighbor girls stop by for the latest gossip.

AUTUMN....already. My favorite time of the year. Colored maple leaves, horse chestnuts on the lawn, silver pennies in an antique crock, yarrow in the vase. Mugs of hot mulled cider served with donuts. Magazines and catalogs piled by the couch and conversations of upcoming holiday plans.

It's WINTER. A bright, sunny day - not stormy. Time for a cup of hot cocoa to warm our hands while sitting on the 'stoop' on an old bench left to the elements. Evergreens now fill the crock and tiny lights twinkle day and night - inviting you to enjoy, 'PORCHING.'
