The name of October, our tenth month, comes from the Latin term, octo, meaning eighth. This was appropriate until the Romans changed their calendar to make it the tenth month. However, many realized the name was not correct, four times they tried unsuccessfully to change it, but the old name, October, apparently suited the Romans better and they preferred to keep it.

The Teddy Bear Bazaar at the Marion United Church will be held November 2, in the Margaret Curtis Fellowship Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. reuzel bollen and coffee will be served from 8:30-11:00 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

There is going to be a porch sale at South Main Street, Marion October 25 and 26. Wide-mouth lid jars, large size women's clothes, western records, dishes and kitchen clutter and other odds and ends. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Ministry of Music, at the Second Reformed Church on October 20, was presented by Julia Reesor and David Wise.

Congratulations to Jeffrey and Elizabeth (Hussey) Schrift, who were united in marriage at the Second Reformed Church.

Kate Buyck has returned to the Armstrong Living Center after a hospital stay.

The one-room country school shown in the paper last week was from the District on Newark Road.

Friday, October 25, Family Roller Skating sponsored by the Marion PTA. 7-8:30 p.m. at the Marion Elementary gym. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Leaning Barn is now open! It is just a delightful place to visit.

Remember - November 1, 2, and 3 will be the annual 'Open House' with refreshments!

John and Fran VanStaalduinen have recently returned from a trip to Canada where they visited with their daughter, Holley and husband, Chris. They took the 'Chi-Cheemaun' ferry to Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world. The parents were treated to a tour of the island with waterfalls, trout and salmon rivers and many historical sites.

October 12, 1928: The Wayne County Produce Company has installed a new filter for clarifying sweet cider and estimates that they will make 15,000 barrels of sweet cider and 20,000 barrels of vinegar.

It is a small world! Last week I received a note and picture from Don VanHall in Denver, Colorado, who had seen a recent issue of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. He has enclosed this photo taken on the steps of the Marion Elementary School on September 14, 1940. Some folks will surely be able to recognize themselves from back 'in the good old days.'
