Sodus students stage play

Sodus High School Drama Club will present The Mouse That Roared at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2. Back for their second year as co-directors are Mike Mulberry (numerous Gates Hall credits) and Marcia Cottrell, Sodus Arts-in-Education Coordinator. The comedy is a satire of the tensions and excesses of the cold war era. First staged in the 1960's, the play was later made into a movie starring Peter Sellers.

The story begins in the tiny, fictitious duchy of Grand Fenwick somewhere in Europe. Grand Fenwick's economy is based entirely on the production of the wine Pinot Grand Fenwick. When a winery in California begins to successfully market a knock-off of Grand Fenwick's prize wine, Pinot Grand Enwick, the principality's economy collapses. The leadership of the country hatches a plan to resolve their crisis, based on the principle that the United States always treats its vanquished foes with kindness. The key is how to become a vanquished foe of the United States and, thus, receive enough foreign aid to bolster the economy. For a country the size of a small town (3 miles wide by 5 miles long), there is only one alternative; go to war, lose and then reap the benefits.

Over 30 cast members are drawn from Sodus Middle and High Schools combined with numerous back-stage student and parent workers to stage the production. Many talented young actors who have been recognized with Elenbe and Stars of Tomorrow awards will appear in the show.

Pre-sale tickets are available for $5 during lunch periods at the high school. Call the high school at 483.5202 to order. Tickets are also available at the door for $6.
