Boy Scouts will hold School Night On Tuesday, September 24, beginning at 7 p.m. boys who are in first through fifth grades will have an opportunity to learn about Tiger Cubs and Cub Scouts, and to register with their local packs. That's when School Night for Scouting will be held at Perkins Elementary School in Newark. Laurie Bushnell, Finger Lakes Council Vice President of Membership, says that at least one school in each school district will host at least one School Night. Boys who are in first grade or seven years old will have an opportunity to join Tiger Cubs, a one year parent-child introduction to Cub Scouting. Boys in second through fifth grade can join Cub Scouts, and boys who have completed fifth grade or are over 11 years old will be able to join Boy Scouts. Interested boys should attend School Night with their parents. Each school has a trained coordinator to explain the programs. Many schools will have posters, demonstrations and live action displays to show attendees what Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts do in their respective program areas. A leader from each Tiger Cub den and Cub Scout pack will introduce attendees to his/her unit, and will be available to answer questions and register boys, as well as parents who want to be leaders. The registration fee is $7, which is sent directly to the National Council. Some local units may also have additional fees, and a subscription to BOYS' LIFE magazine is $9. Flyers will be sent home from school during School Night week. Additional information can be obtained through the Finger Lakes Council Service Center in Geneva by calling 315.789.1166. The council serves more than 5000 youth members and 2000 volunteer adult leaders in Ontario, Wayne, Seneca and Yates counties.
