The kids have by now acclimated to the new school year and the jitters of the new year have subsided. The weather has been nice, but the mornings are just too chilly to open all the windows. It's tough getting used to it getting darker earlier, too. I guess it's good practice for when the time changes. The Kraft Shack is busy this time of year, with all the holidays coming up. It's great to have the opportunity to make things to put on the coffee table or door to decorate. DO you have a space in the living room on the wall behind the couch? A nice oil painting would go well there wouldn't it? On Saturday, October 5 from l0 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can Oil Paint with Larry. Larry will be teaching the Bob Ross method. $40 includes all. Please be sure to register in advance and pre-pay, or put a $l0 non-refundable deposit down for all the classes you sign up for. If you have a large group of people that would like to attend on the same night, please let the Kraft Shack know and they can schedule a night just for you. The Sodus Intermediate School has many clubs. Last week, I mentioned the Recycling Club; another club the students are involved with is the Radio Club. The Radio Club is an activity where students can learn about careers in radio programming. Students practice oral presentation skills and produce radio programs over the public address system in the Intermediate School on Fridays during activity period. They call the station WSIS. During the programs, the students play music, give weather forecasts from the Internet, conduct contests, and do advertising. Some students even become station managers. Club members get to be disc jockeys at activity nights and occasionally help with morning announcements. The club is a great experience for the kids, and the list of students is a lengthy one. What a fun learning experience. The Apple Shed presents its 3rd Annual Scarecrow Convention and Contest. Each year the event has brought schools, families, community groups and individuals together by recognizing, awarding and displaying their creative talents. This year's contest categories are: community group or club, children (age 12 and under with no physical adult supervision other than setup), adults, and schools. The individual categories will be judged and prizes awarded. Special awards include the best themed scarecrow (the 2002 theme is weddings), scariest and funniest. Category winners can win cash prizes from $50 to $250!
The Humane Society will have its Walk-A-Thon this Sunday (Sept. 22) from noon to 5 p.m. Please feel free to join in the afternoon of fun and prizes for the entire family. There will be Goodie bags for all walkers; awards and recognition for individuals raising the most money; lunch; and music by the Local Shepherds There's a Chicken Barbecue from Burnham's Canal Side Restaurant at Newark's Quality Inn; a dog personality contest; Adopt-A-Pet with photos of animals available for adoption; and a mini-groom by Crawford's K-9 Cuts. The event begins at the Silver Hill Technology Park on Rt. 88 in Newark. Check the Humane Society website. Don't forget the House Tour in Newark tomorrow. Check the Events page for more info. Also, tomorrow is the Pultneyville Community Garage Sale. (Sounds like rain - take your umbrellas.) The Family Resource Center on Buerman Rd., Sodus is in need of a vehicle donation. If you have a decent, running vehicle and would like to donate it to the Center and receive a tax deduction, contact Maureen Parks at 483.8080. They could use vans or trucks and would be most grateful. The fall season makes you want to bake more, perhaps a great pumpkin bread. I just happen to have a recipe for you. This is from Addie Campbell and it tastes great! Pumpkin Bread
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream together sugar and shortening; add eggs and vanilla, blend, and then add pumpkin. Stir all dry ingredients together and add to the first mixture. Pour into 2 well-oiled bread pans (I use Pam spray and put mine in a larger rectangular cake pan.) Bake 45 minutes to 1 hour ( I have an electric oven and it takes mine about 35 minutes - you can tell when it is golden and pulls a bit from the sides. Also, you can insert a knife in the middle....and ummmmm the taste of fall is yours. If you have any information you'd like to have added to the column, please feel free to send it along to me at All birthdays, special events and things just for fun are welcome. Don't look for a column next Friday... It's Vacation Time! Copyright
