Replacing trees lost in the storm
Trees, especially those located along village and municipal streets, are extremely important for many reasons. Street trees can help lower heating bills during the winter by creating windbreaks that shield buildings. In the summer, trees can lower air conditioning costs by providing shade to homes and businesses. Trees also act as air filters by processing out air born pollutants thus making the air in our downtown areas a little safer and healthier. In addition, trees provide habitat for songbirds and other forms of wildlife. Perhaps one of the most important reasons why street trees should be established in local communities is because streets that are lined with trees bring a unique and pleasant character to rural communities. When communities are enhanced by street trees they attract visitors and tourists that come to our quaint communities, which is good for our economy and local businesses. The character of residential areas are also enhanced by the presents of street trees. With the right choice of species and with some regular pruning, street trees won't interfere with power lines and phone lines. There are many species of trees that are especially good for placement in sidewalk cutouts and that are salt tolerant.
