Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

My heart goes out to those in the Wayne County area - you have definitely had a handful of scary things happen to you lately. First the fire on Main Street and then the Ice Storm. We went through the Ice Storm in '91 and I thought that was the worst thing I'd even seen and they say this one is worse. It is so good that people had places to go to keep warm and out of the storm. It's still hard to wait for life to get back to normal. Spring and summer will be soooo appreciated this year.

Carol Dwyer who use to live in the area said the temps in Washington are in the 80's and the cherry trees are in full bloom (and I'm sure absolutely beautiful.) The area has seen an increase in tourists, 'despite the goings on in the world.' She, I'm sure, was surprised by the fact that our Spring hasn't gotten here yet. (Someone did order it, right?!)

I spoke to Doug and Eileen Hooper the other day and the temps are really warm in Florida as well. They had gone to Busch Gardens a few days before and one day, Doug and the kids were on the way to the beach. Eileen will be coming up for a visit in April for her niece's wedding. Her mom Betty will be coming up for a few months during the summer. I told Eileen we'll know she's a 'tourist' because she will be dressed in her warm clothes (because to her, 60 will be cold.) Eileen has a new job at a beauty salon down the road from her and Doug is still working at Disney's MGM.

Janet Leschhorn has a new job, too, which she is really enjoying. As soon as it warms up enough for people to have their garage sales, Janet will know about each and every one of them. We used to go all the time. Actually, it's because of Janet that I have aquariums. I got the first one at a garage sale with her.

Sodus Chamber of Commerce news: No meeting in April due to the Citizen of Year Award Banquet. Next regular business meeting will be May 1 at Nick's Family Restaurant. Reservations should be called to Mary Jane Mumby at 483.4067 by 4/28 to ensure the dining room is set up adequately.

Patti from Maui has a full plate - her daughter got married last weekend and her son is flying a B52 in Iraq. Each in itself can be stressful enough, and knowing Patti, she had a ton of other things going on at the same time..She is such a busy girl. (Congrats to you and your daughter. We will keep your son and all the other people serving in Iraq in our prayers. And we will remember the families, spouses and the little ones waiting for their return.

News from Ralph Everdyke in Florida:

' Not too much to report. Last Thursday I played golf at a course called River Ridge. It has several ponds on it and it turned flowers out to be kind of a nature study. It is the mating season for alligators and I saw several in the ponds. One was laying along the bank of the pond and I didn't go close enough to actually measure him but I think he was at least ten feet long. Also I saw a mother Sand Hill Crane and she had two little babies with her.

' Yesterday it was cold and windy here, but no snow. This morning it was 38 degrees when I got up, but then it got sunny out and Betty and I took a ride to Wildwood, FL. There is a Russell Stover Candy outlet store there so we purchased some fattening food. It is a large store and everytime we go there it's crowded with people.

' On the way up, we took Rte 75, which is a main highway. Very busy with people - I guess headed north after their vacation down here. On the way back, we took some country roads, which was much more relaxing and more scenic.

' We will probably be heading north about the first week of May, if it has stopped snowing up there by then.

( You'll notice that Ralph said if in the last sentence... we're hoping to have no snow in May! But it has happened before, hasn't it...)

The Kraft Shack: THEOREM PAINTING: Mon., April 14, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Come and enjoy Theorem painting with Jim Ryan. This time, the theorem stencil will be pre-cut for you. $35 includes all. Please remember to register in advance.

A fun idea to make for the kids to play with next week while they're on Spring Break. Play Dough Recipe: 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tsp. Cream of Tartar, 1 tbsp. baby oil, 1 cup of water with food coloring added. Mix ingredients and cook on low heat for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and knead until smooth. Store tightly in covered containers. (Thanks, Sandy.)

Don't forget the Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday at the L.W. Emporium in Ontario at 11 a.m. (The weather is supposed to straighten up by the weekend - no snow or ice in the forecast.) For children ages 1-8 years. Every child gets a bag of candy. Find the golden egg for a special prize.

Congrats to Heluva Good Cheese for another job well done: Advertising for its dip and cheese won Heluva Good LLC Honors from the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA ) as one of the dairy industry's best mixed media campaigns for 2002. National entries are judged based on creativity and bottom-line results. The four awards were presented to Heluva Good March 27 in Tampa, FL. This is the second consecutive year that Heluva Good has received an award for the best mixed media campaign for its dip and cheese lines. Great job!

Remember: Tonight's Lenten Fish Dinner at the Fairville Fire Hall is from 4:30 p.m. until...

Sunday (April 13), there will be the Annual Spring Antique Show and Sale by Wayne County Antique Dealers at Ultralife Batteries (rear bldg. at Tech. Park), Rt. 88, Newark; 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

There's a Spring Sale at Lukacs Studios, 7060 Route 14, Sodus Point: 10% off all in-stock pottery, April 12-l9. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.(Phone: 315.483.4357) The Studio is a really neat place to see. We had the opportunity to go on a tour years ago.

A great way to keep the kids entertained, take them to the Sodus Aquatics Facility during April Break. Regular Programs will continue without interruption: Open Swim Mon & Wed 6-7:30; Fri 6:30-8:30; Adult Swim Mon & Wed 7:30-8:30; Morning Swim 6:15-7:30

Thanks to everyone who sent me information to add to this week's column. It's really important to be able to share information with people who live out of the area as well as those who still live in the area.

Remember to pray for our people in Iraq... keep them in your thoughts during the day. They and the families who wait patiently for them to come home are all very brave.

And condolences to the family of Martha Jane Barnes - her daughter, Karen Castle and her husband, Richard, and son, John. (She was a very nice lady.)

Have a great week and enjoy those warm temperatures.
