Society seeks historical items Pictures, Civil War recipes and Wayne County memories are needed to complete two Historical Society publications that will be available for sale this summer. Andrea Evangelist, Director of the Wayne County Historical Society and Old Jail Museum is compiling a pictorial history of Wayne County that will be going to the print shop on May 1. The title is A Gathering of Memories: Photos and Recollections of Wayne County, New York. The soft-covered volume will contain 250 pages and more than 500 pictures interspersed with memories and stories of people that have a Wayne County connection. Pictures of people or buildings are from the Butler and Huron area; and pictures from any of the 15 towns are needed for the Agriculture; Fires, Storms and Floods; and People of Wayne County sections. Pictures of school groups, club members, Sunday school classes, or pictures of local dramatic productions are also needed. If images are scanned and saved to CD in the proper format at the proper resolution, they can be e-mailed to the Historical Society. Photocopies of pictures cannot be used and they will not reproduce well. The easiest way of to share a picture is to loan the picture to the museum so the photos can be scanned and then returned to the owner. Credit will be noted in the publication. The Society will accept the donation of any photographs to add to the Museum's collection. Pictures from the eastern and western ends of the County are always needed. Parochial school memories, reminiscences of what Main Street looked like before 1950, and stories about early factories and business are needed for all towns. Memories and stories can be submitted in writing or given orally Recipes from the 1860s are needed for a book of Civil War Letters that the Society is publishing this summer. Recipes should be ones that were used in Wayne County during the Civil War years. Please contact the Society on 21 Butternut Street in Lyons, the office at 946.4943 or e-mail the Society at wchs4943@aol.com
