Damages in Wayne reach $5 million

With ice storm damages already estimated at about $5 million in Wayne County, officials are asking for more information.

Arcadia Supervisor Joe DeSanto says that residents and business owners should contact his office to report any homes or businesses that suffered damage or loss from the storm. The extent of insurance coverage will also need to be determined.

Assessing the losses will be a formidable task, and will include not only damages, but the costs of debris collection, disposal, tree removals, and municipal budgets for the highway departments. The final reports will be used to apply for aid from the federal government.

Many residents will need to pay to clear limbs or trees from their properties. Home owner's insurance generally only covers removal of trees and debris that threaten the residential structure, unless the property owner has special coverage for debris clean-up.

Officials expect that there will also be significant crop damage from local fruit growers. Some of the hardest hit areas were in northern Wayne County, and officials estimate that sour cherry growers may have lost up to 85% of their trees.

If your residence sustained structural damage, or if you suffered losses due to the interruption of your business, call DeSanto at 331.7369 to make a report.
