Happenings John and Fran Van Staalduinen, formerly of Union Street, recently returned from Lynden, Washington. While on the west coast they visited the Skagit County to see acres of daffodils in bloom. Time was spent seeing the sites around Puget Sound, and a skiing trip into British Columbia where the family enjoyed a reunion at Big White Ski Area. Their highlight was seeing their granddaughter, Zoe Dumond of Grand Rapids, Michigan. I give 'Honest Abe' a lot of credit. To read by the light of the fireplace is no easy task. Thanks to those who purchased daffodils supporting the American Cancer Society, and to Eleanor Schoonerman who helped. On Saturday, I entertained the Tulip Women of the 'Red Hat Society' at our Marion Museum. They toured the rooms, had an assortment of teas and tried some of the cookies. We had time to converse and Queen Mum Pat VanderMolen outlined the upcoming monthly events in store. Fragrant and complex in flavor, green tea has been popular in Asia for more than 3000 years. You've probably heard that it's good for you - studies suggest that its antioxidant properties might help prevent disease and ward off cancer, among other benefits. But you may not be aware that green and black teas come from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis. The difference is simply in the preparation of the leaves. To make green tea, the leaves are steamed and dried. For black tea, the leaves are withered, rolled, fermented and dried. April 15, 1937: The Marion drinking water is analyzed every two months. The latest report shows it to rank in purity among the highest in the state. The bacterial count is only four and the bacteria is of the harmless variety. 'Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.' Pearl and Henry Ververs greeted 13 relatives at the Golden Corral in Fulton, to celebrate their 55th Wedding Anniversary. They went to Doug and Jane's home in Hannibal for cake and ice cream. Pearl and Henry Ververs's grandson James from Hannibal was named to the Dean's List at the U of R with an average of 3.75. The modern Easter bunny is of German origin, and the 'Easter Hare' functioned much like a springtime St. Nicholas. It left colored eggs for good children. April 23 will be Author's Night - 7 p.m. Marion Festival - September 19 and 20 from 9 to 5. Dr. Debbie Corpus and children Bob and Mary Grace of Cannel, Indiana, were guests of Debbie's aunt, Isabelle Bushart last week. While there, they all enjoyed a trip to Syracuse to meet Isabelle's sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Dave Brandon of Albany. The group had a delicious lunch at the Ramada Inn. The day before the ice storm, Mary Bushart of Sodus, Caroline Bushart of East Williamson, Mary Bushart and Barbara Roegiers of Marion all met at the home of Isabelle Bushart for a sisters lunch. Travel News: 'Trains, Cabaret, Shopping' is the first trip of the season for the Marion Happy Travelers. We leave the Fire Hall at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14 for a ride to the Albion area to enjoy coffee and pastries at Watts Farms Country Market. There is a country gift shop, homemade fudge and Orchard Express Train Ride and more. Lunch is at Tillman's Historic Village Inn followed by Live Celebrity Club Cabaret Show featuring salutes to the music of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand and more. Call 926.7764 for reservations. Thursday, June 12 is the Bill Gaither Homecoming at Elmira. We will have supper at the Hilltop Inn before the program; floor-level seats for the program. Call soon as this trip is over half full. Leave a message if no answer. July 9 takes you to grape country with a stop at Arbor Hill, lunch at the Redwood Inn, and California Suite at the Bristol Valley Playhouse. Wednesday, August 13, Stirling, Ontario for the famous Anne of Green Gables. September 16-18: An Amish Sampler trip to Ohio.
