Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

One of these days the weather is going to surprise us and actually stay in the 60's and 70's. (I think I got into some poison ivy cleaning up the garden... I took all the precautions wore the gloves and washed my hands right afterward. Bumpy and a itchy what else could it be?)

whabbits! The next regular business meeting of the Sodus Town Chamber of Commerce will be held May 1 at Nick's Family Restaurant. Reservations should be called to Mary Jane Mumby at 483.4067 by Monday to ensure the dining room is set up adequately. The meeting starts at 5 p.m.

The Old Tyme Country Faire will be in Sodus before we know it. If you are interested, there is Vendor space available for Saturday, August 9 at the WCTA parking lot starting at 10 a.m. Reserve a 16 x 16 space for $50. Contact Sodus Chamber, PO 187, Sodus, NY 14551; email: chamber14551@yahoo.com or go to www.sodusny.com for more information.

There are many fun things in the making for this summer, the outdoor movies in Sodus Point will begin on August 9, so mark your calendars. I'll let you know details as the time gets closer.

I spoke to Brian Hooper the other day and he said that in Florida, they were looking for the temps to be in the 90's by the end of the week. (We'd be happy just to keep it at 70 for a few days.) Well, compared to the 90's, Eileen will think it's quite cold up here when she comes for a visit....although she did live up in the area for years. How would she forget what April can be like? (Bring a big warm sweater.)

Debra Ross and the kids have been busy: On Sunday, April 20, they went to the Genesee Country Village and Museum to the Nature Trek. Debra is a reader of the column as well. Did you see her on News 8 the other day, telling everyone about the Redwings games? The Rochester Red Wings play the Syracuse Skychiefs today.

This Saturday and Sunday (April 26 & 27), you are invited to the Boyd's Collection Spring Event at the School House Country Store on 7290 Maxwell Rd. in Sodus at 10 a.m. This is Boyd's l0th Anniversary of the Bearstone Collection.

St. Michael's School Auction is on Saturday (April 26) at 320 Main St. in Newark. There will be a silent and live auction with over 500 items to bid on. The Silent auction begins at 7 p.m. and the live auction will follow.

Don't forget the LOC & Salmon Derby is going on along Lake Ontario from April 25 through May 4. (Now you know why all those cars are parked along the road.)

There's a Chicken Barbecue at the East Williamson Fire Hall tomorrow (Sat., April 26) that starts at 4:30 p.m. (Take out only.)

Tomorrow morning, you can head to the Williamson American Legion on Lake Ave. for and All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast, from 8 a.m. until noon. Adults, $4.50, children 6-12 years for $3.50, and children 5 and under free. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice and coffee.

Amy Toye sent me a list of the Escorted Tours & Packages they have set up. Looks like a lot of fun: June 20-22, New York City, 3-day Bus trip to Times Square for sightseeing, theatre, shopping. Please call Lyons if interested for details. 315.946.5334. The Aruba 2004 Informational Meeting will be Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at the Sodus Center Fire Hall.

Sounds like they have a lot of fun packages set up... they took all the worry out for you, you just go and enjoy. (Thanks, Amy.)

Mother's Day and Memorial Day are on the way. Sandy at The Kraft Shack has some great crafts for the occasions. Monday, May 5, 6:30 to 9 p.m., a prefect decoration for Memorial Day, Fourth of July or just to be patriotic. $21 includes all. A Kids Mother Day Class will be held Wed., May 7, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The kids will be thrilled to make a gift for their Mom for Mothers Day. $12 includes all. Please remember to pre-register for the classes you have chosen to take.

Hard to believe it'll be May next week, isn't it? (We'll be going right into summer... spring better get a move on...)

Heritage Square in Ontario will be have an Annual Spring Sale at the Barn on Friday, June 6 from 9-4, Saturday, June 7 from 9-4, and Sunday, June 8 from 9-noon (note change in dates due to ice storm). They hope to see you there.

Ralph Everdyke must have been busy this week enjoying the Florida sunshine. Ralph, are you out there? (I know he's reading this...he reads the column every week.) Pretty soon, the 'pilgrimage' from the south to Newark will be taking place.

Lorrie Zone went into surgery on Tuesday the 22nd. Have a fast recovery.

Even though many have come back home from Iraq, there are still many people who are helping to keep peace. Let's remember to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Here are some good books to share with your kids:

  • Big Mama by Tony Crunk
  • Sailing off to Sleep by Linda Ashman
  • A Far Fetched Story by Karin Cates

and, of course, the Franklin favorites:

  • Franklin's New Friend and Franklin Goes To The Hospital by Paulette Bourgeois.

If you have events, favorite books to share or anything at all, please write to me at

mgoodcooke@yahoo.com

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks to everyone who sent me things for this week's column.
