WCHS membership drive
As part of this year's annual support campaign, members of the membership committee, Sally DeBarr, Winston Dobbins, Tom Healy, and Patti Holdraker, are placing an emphasis on attracting new members and urging current members to renew their membership for 2004. Membership runs from January 1 - December 31; New members this time receive membership for 2004 and the remainder of 2003 free of charge. The mission of the Society, which was formed in 1949, is to encourage an appreciation of the history of Wayne County through the collection, preservation, and exhibition of artifacts and to disseminate historical information about Wayne County and the surrounding area. Since 1962, the Museum has been housed in the old Wayne County Jail at 21 Butternut Street, a building that will celebrate its 150th birthday next year. The Society holds annual fund-raising activities such as a Cemetery Walk in September, an dramatic historical production in October, the February Starlight Gala, 'Spirits of Butternut Street' presentation in April, and the June Wine Tasting, but the major portion of the funds needed for museum operations comes from the membership. The goal this year is to attract 100 new members. The Society offers several levels of membership, beginning with the household membership at $25. Members receive reduced prices for special events and classes, free admission to guided Museum tours, a bi-monthly newsletter, an invitation to the Annual Gala, and free use of the reference library and archives. Funds raised during the campaign will be used to support the operation of the Museum and the Society's many educational programs. To request a membership form, call t 946.4943, weekdays 10 to 4.
