Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Another week of summer fun - not too bad with some rain. (Nice when you don't have to spend lots of time watering the lawn and gardens. One of the thunderstorms, however, was a rough one indeed. There is yet another weekend of fun coming up with the outdoor movie at the park in Sodus Point and the festival in Sodus.

Final ZooBrew of the Summer will be Friday, August 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Monroe County' s Seneca Park Zoo. This adult-only event includes live music by Providence and a cash bar. Barbecue food will also be available for purchase. Admission is $5 general admission and $3 for zoo members. Must be 21 or older. All proceeds from this event benefit the Seneca Park Zoo Society. Enter to win two hours of limousine service provided by Legault Limousine and an overnight stay at the Wellesley Inn. This door prize package will need to be booked at a later date. Zoo Brew is sponsored in part by Freetime and WCMF. For more information, call 585.336.7200. If you missed the first two ZooBrews, you cannot afford to miss the final event! More than 900 people have already chosen to rediscover the zoo at this adult-only event. The Seneca Park Zoo is owned and operated by Monroe County. The Seneca Park Zoo Society is a not-for-profit organization which has, since 1957, provided education, fundraising, special events and public relations support to the Zoo. The zoo is open 364 days each year, and is located at 2222 St. Paul St., one half mile north of Route 104. For information on Seneca Park Zoo Society membership or other programs, call 585.467.9453 or visit www.senecaparkzoo.org

At Long Acres Farm, Aug. 8 & 9, Friday & Saturday, will be the First Moonlight Maze weekend of the season. Because of summer hours, tickets sell from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Bring a friend and a flashlight.

Tonight (Friday, August 8) will be the Patriotic Pet Parade. Parade line-up is at 6 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Sodus. It ends in Sodus Village Park, where there will be an Ice Cream Social and a street dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. Music provided by Music Mix, playing country music and hits from the 50's through the 90's. DJ Steve Bates, will be announcing the winners of the Pet Parade.

Don't forget it's going to be a busy weekend at Sodus and Sodus Point, too. Saturday, August 9 in Sodus Point, there will be a Fishing Derby, Horse & Wagon Rides, Alice in Zeroland, and a free outdoor movie ('Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone') at dusk. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs (don't forget the kids), and maybe a picnic. (You've got to have food at a movie.) Food will be available at the park - hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, chicken sandwiches, popcorn, soda, water and more. Sounds good. Portable bathrooms are available at the park as well.

Also on the Saturday, the Old Tyme Country Faire at the WCTA parking lot (Route 88) in Sodus. And don't forget the treasures you can find at the garage sales scattered though the Village of Sodus. While you are out and about, be sure to stop into the Cobblestone School House in Wallington. The School will be open from noon to 4. Everything about the one-room school house is authentic. Perhaps your kids have been on a field trip to the School House and told you about it. I had the opportunity to be a part of the trip with Mr. Sullivan's class years ago. As you sit at the desks, you can imagine what it must have been like being a student attending the school and how the modern conveniences (including inside plumbing) have made school life so much easier.

If I get the chance I might just come along to Fair... sounds like there are a lot of fun things going on that I have to be a part of.

And, if you go to the Fair, take your old eyeglasses and hearing aids to donate to the Sodus Lioness Club. members will collect them at the Duck Pond and the Cookie Walk booths.

On August 17 is the Wayne Drumlins Swap Meet and Car Show in Marion.

Save the dates: August l6 and l7, The Apple Shed will have their Peach Festival and the Hard Core 2003 Mountain Bike Race. The newly-designed bike trails are an approximate 3-mile loop. Nobra Sanctioned Race with Beginner, Sport, and Expert Classes for ages 12 and up. Prizes provided by Geneva Bicycle Center and there is a cash pay-out for Expert Class. Free t-shirts are provided for those entrants who pre-register and one-day NORBA licenses are available on the day of the race for $5. Call 315.331.6294.

At the Sodus Free Library next week (Aug. 11 - l5), there is Story Hour with Mrs. Combes from l0:30 - ll:30. Tuesday is the Imagination Reading Club and on Thursday at ll:30 all members of the Reading Programs are welcome to the end of the program with a family picnic and the sounds of Tom Sieling (who is quite good, by the way). The Library hopes you had a great time picturing and imagining with them. Reading a book takes you anywhere you want to go and it's free, fun and relaxing. We used to have so much fun during the programs and hated it when they were over. For the picnic on the l4th, please bring a sandwich and the library will supply the beverage and dessert. The picnic will immediately be followed by the music program by singer/songwriter Tom Sieling. 2003 certificates will be awarded and there will be extra drawings. Can't miss that!

Lap-Sit Storytime at the Williamson Library is for ages l8 months to 3 years of age and promises stories, crafts and games every Monday at l0:30. August l3 at 7:30 is the Pajama Storytime, so don't forget to get all snuggled up in your most comfy pj's and bring your favorite stuffed friend. Enjoy cookies, stories and milk.

The Summer Concert at the Lighthouse at Sodus Point on Sunday, the l0th, will feature the music of the Chorus of the Genesee. It'll be Barbershop at the Beach. Don't forget to look for my neighbor, Al Dobbin. The concert is at 2 p.m. Bring along your blankets and lawnchairs. It's a great way to spend some time on a Sunday afternoon.

And on Monday, it's the opening of the Wayne County Fair in Palmyra. NYS Harness Racing, Martial Arts Demonstration, Amusement Rides, Talent Contest, Demolition Derby, 4-H Displays, Pie Contest, & Live Entertainment. Check the website for the scheduled events for each day at www.waynecofair.com

If you have events you'd like to share please write to me. Or write and let me know how much you and your kids enjoyed the Summer Reading Programs at the Libraries.
