United Open Bass Tournament results

Forty-five teams of competitive bass anglers gathered at the 3rd Annual Americans United Open Bass Tournament held on July 20 at the Erie Canal Widewaters in Port Gibson.

This Annual Open Bass Tournament raised $529, which was donated to the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross and to the Hospeace House, a home for terminally ill patients in Naples.

'I must admit, I was a bit overwhelmed seeing such a large number of trailers entering the park, but at the same time I was thrilled knowing more money would be raised for charity,' said Frank Thomas of Marion, who organizes the event each year.

First place honors went to the team of Pete Hettenbaugh and his partner Randy Sloat with a three-fish weight of 13.50 pounds! Pete and Randy culled their fish from the heavy brush piles and trees lining the canal. Obviously, their game plan worked, and the win awarded them $464. They also took home $100 for winning the Lunker category with a 4.79 pound bucketmouth. Now that some serious fishing and they deserve to be congratulated!

Second place and a cash prize of $348 went to William Bryant and Vince Lawyer with a three fish limit of 12.15 pounds. Third place went to a couple of Williamson boys, Dave Kotwas and Mark Hertlien who are now $232 ahead. A fourth place prize of $116.00 went to Lyons residents, Adam and Irvin Pentycofe.

After the weigh-in and a mouthful of pizza and refreshments, a benefit raffle was held. Even those who didn't fair well in the tournament took home fishing rods, lures, gift cards and even a Hummingbird fish finder. Everyone who participated received generous baits packs donated by Yamamoto Custom Bait Company.

Thanks to each angler and the following sponsors who had generously supported this year's event: Ballantyne RV & Marine, B&E Fishing Tackle, Dick's Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain Sports, Gallyans, Gary Yamamoto Custom Bait Company, Pizza Hut, Pontillo's, and Antonio's Pizza, Shur-fine Marion, and Wegmans-Newark.

An extended appreciation goes to the 'Happy Hookers' Bass Club, which is based in Newark, for allowing me to use their digital scale during the weigh-in and to John Albanese for the use of his party tent.
