Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

catThis week seemed different - almost like fall is in the air. Maybe getting kids ready for school has something to do with it. It seems to get dark earlier at night, and the nights are cooler. (Summer went by awfully fast. Too bad winters don't go that quickly.)

Long Acre Farms in Macedon will be having their Annual Civil War Encampment and Living History Weekend on Saturday, September 6 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday the 7 from 9 to 4. Join the Union and Confederate soldiers in their camps and on the battlefield. These dedicated re-enactors put on a great show every year. See how camps were set up and how cannons were loaded. Bring the whole family for a day outdoors. Saturday, Camps open to the public at 9 a.m. At 10, there will be Independent Unit Drills and at 2, Battle Re-enactment. At 8 p.m., there will be a Blue & Grey Social Barn Dance with live music & period dancing (Costumes encouraged). On Sunday, camps open at 9 and there is a church service at 10. Independent Unit Drills are at 11 and Battle Re-enactment is at 1. FREE Admission to the public; donations requested for the battle re-enactments only. Handicap & Wheelchair accessible to market, ice cream deck & courtyard area.

On Tuesday, Monroe County's Seneca Park Zoo male orangutan, Lowell, took a break from his usual surroundings to explore territory usually occupied by zookeepers or volunteers. Lowell came upon Paul Louis, zoo volunteer, as he was cleaning exhibit space. Paul received an unexpected hug from the approximately three hundred pound animal. Louis remained calm and talked to Lowell as zoo officials enacted the protocol for these types of situations. Larry Sorel, Zoo Director stated, 'Although Lowell was temporarily out of his exhibit, the general public was never in any potential danger. Zoo officials immediately took charge of the situation and assisted Paul Louis, the extremely calm volunteer, to freedom. Lowell has been at our zoo since September, 2001 and will celebrate his 19th birthday in October. Lowell came to our zoo from the Wildlife Waystation in Los Angeles.'

Don't forget to call Amy Toye at the Travel agency in Sodus to let her know if you are interested in going on the tours they have lined up. October 11-12: Vermont and Massachusetts shopping/fall foliage.

The Great Sodus Bay Screen at Sodus Point will have their last movie Saturday - a double feature: Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Jaws. There are loads of activities throughout the day.

There is one more concert at the Point you can enjoy on Sunday (August 31). The Vic Plati Orchestra will perform contemporary Big Band Music.

The M&M's have a website where I found a trail mix recipe, something to think about when packing the lunch boxes for school. The kids can help make these quick, little snack packets. Then take them along in the car, to school or anywhere. What you'll need:

  • 1 bag (14 ounces) M&M's Brand Milk Chocolate Candies
  • 2 cups popped popcorn
  • 1/2 cup roasted peanuts
  • 1/2 cup banana chips
  • 1/2 cup dried sweetened cranberries
  • 1/2 cup raisins

What to do:

In a large mixing bowl, gently toss all the ingredients and then keep in an airtight container. Before school, pack the mix into snack bags. Pop the bags into your kids' backpacks or lunch bags. (Makes 2 quarts.)

The Kraft Shack will be having their l5th Annual Kraft Karnival Saturday, September 6 from l0 - 3 at the store. Everything will be l0% off retail (larger discounts on many items). This sale is on stock merchandise only and sales prices are good only on the day of the sale. You are invited to spend the day or a little while to check out the booths that are set up with many interesting craft projects. You can make one or all (samples are displayed at the Kraft Shack). Some things that you can make are a Snowman Ornament on a sled, a Water Garden Girl, and a Spoon Witch, just to mention a few. Hot dogs and soda will be available.

Don't forget there is a Story Hour with Mrs. Combes at the Sodus Library every Monday from l0:30 - ll:30.

Genesee Country Village & Museum will have a fireworks display on Saturday, August 30. Also on the 30th, at 1:30 p.m., you can enjoy a l9th Century Baseball Game.

Do you have a fall tradition to share? My family always went to Naples where we visited the Wild Winds Nature Center, looked at the beautiful leaves and, of course, had to buy apples and grapes. It was a lot of fun and made it feel like we were ending summer and welcoming the next season. Please write to me and let me know what your family does.

Have a great week, summer vacation is almost over. A fun way to exercise with the kids is to go for a walk every night when you can. It's a great way to talk with the kids and the neighbors. The dog will love it, too.
