Chorus to perforn holiday musical

The Newark Community Children's Chorus will present Star Mother's Youngest Child, a reader's musical, on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. in the Newark High School auditorium.

The story was written by Louise Moeri and has been adapted for the group's use by retired Perkins School music teacher Mary DeMarsh. Trina Schart Hyman illustrated the book.

'Just once, I'd like to celebrate a Christmas! Is that too much to ask?' shouted the lonely, old woman. And on that same night, up in the sky, another voice echoed her plea. 'Just once,' said Star Mother's Youngest Child, 'I want to celebrate Christmas the way they do down there.' And so on Christmas day, a cranky old woman encounters an ugly child and together, they share one unforgettable Christmas.

The Newark Community Children's Chorus' performance will feature the reading talents of members Johanna Austin, Karley Bush, Kendra Bush, Molly Gibson, Olivia Howard, Elizabeth Norcott, and Abby Vanderbrook. The role of Star Mother will be read by Hannah Rothpearl. Josiah Austin will portray the Youngest Child. Alexandra Schober will read the part of the Old Woman.

The singing talents of Jarrod Burris, Carla Lash, Ariel Rodrick, Marina Ruffalo, Meghan Smith, Kelsey Williams, and Paige Williams will be featured in solos.

Other chorus members include Colby Brown, Karissa Bush, Ashley Farley, Alison Hoe, Emily Middlebrook, Megan Piampiano, Anesha Range, MacKenzie Reiss, Isaac Scott, Garrett Smith, Bianca Tantalo, and Brandy Thorn.

Choral selections include 'Stars,' 'Peaceful, Silent Night,' 'Carol of the Bells,' 'O Christmas Tree,' 'We'll Dress the House,' 'The Angels Sing, the Church Bells Ring,' and 'Where Do the Stars Go?'

The program length is under an hour and is suitable for children of all ages.

The founding director of the Newark Community Children's Chorus is Laurie Williams. The group's accompanist is Newark music teacher MaryLou Bonnell. Community members or businesses interested in providing financial support for the Newark Community Children's Chorus should contact Laurie Williams at 315.331.5851 or 225 Elmwood Avenue Newark, NY 14513.
