Museums plan Holiday open houses

The Wayne County Museums' Holiday Open Houses will be December 7, from noon to 5. Eleven museums will take part in this tour and will be decked out in their holiday best.

At 21 Butternut Street in Lyons, the Wayne County Old Jail Museum will be open to welcome visitors for this holiday tour. The Lyons Middle/High School Band will provide holiday music, costumed docents will conduct guided tours and Wassail and cookies will be offered.

Also in Lyons, the Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company, 95 Water Street, comer of Leach Road, will be celebrating the holidays by welcoming visitors for tours from 1 to 5. The building is the former office of the H.G. Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company, world-renowned for its prize-winning essential oils. Punch and cookies will be served.

The Arcadia Historical Museum, 120 High Street, Newark, will be decorated for the holidays and will feature two uniformed Civil War reenactors. At the Arcadia Historical Society's Marbletown Centennial Schoolhouse, 6631 Miller Road, Newark, craft vendors will be on hand.

The Schoolhouse, with many of its original furnishings, will be decorated in holiday style to welcome visitors. Refreshments will be offered at both locations.

In Rose, the Farnsworth Museum on School Street will be open. It features displays and artifacts depicting the history of the town of Rose, including a rare costume collection and bottle collection. Punch and cookies will be offered.

The Sodus Point Lighthouse Museum, Ontario Street, Sodus Point, will be open from 2 to 5. Built in 1870, the museum houses collections depicting the history of the Sodus Bay region, the War of 1812 and Sodus Point after the turn of the Twentieth Century. The museum will be open for tours.

Butler Center Methodist-Episcopal Church was built in 1836 and is the oldest known Methodist church in Wayne County. It was recently listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Sites and is designated a Methodist Historic Site. The church will be decorated and music for the occasion will be provided on an 1880's reed organ original to the church. Refreshments will be provided.

In Palmyra, you can visit The Book of Mormon Publication Site, 217 East Main Street, Palmyra, the Alling Coverlet Museum Gift Shop, Palmyra Historical Museum and the William Phelps General Store Museum.

While visiting your first museum, don't forget to pick up your Free Drawing registration form. You will be entered once for each museum you visit. Forms are available at each museum.
