CaesarMissing Sodus

It was a sad and difficult weekend for us. After a few days of being sick, our little Westie, Caesar, passed away on Saturday. I have had him in many of the columns. He always looked especially dapper after his trip to the groomer. Hopefully, in the spring we will introduce a new puppy to the column. We haven't decided whether it will be another Westmoreland Terrier or a Bichon Frise (with I'm sure many more cute pictures to share). Of course, we will still have candid photos of Sarah to share. She's always doing something. It took her days to get over her loss. I felt bad for her. I let her open one of her Christmas presents early to make her feel better.

I got this note from Ralph Everdyke in Florida:

swimmers in floridaHi Melissa: Just read the article about your Caesar. Very nice of the editor to put it on the Internet. Reg and Laurie arrived about an hour ago and the kids are already in the pool. Alex is on the left, Christina in the middle, and a new found friend on the right. The pool temperature was 87 degrees and the temperature outdoors was about 73. It is a nice way to spend December 23, though.

(Thanks to Donna Comella for having the write up about Caesar. It was very kind and a nice memorial for him. Thanks also to all the people who have been so kind in sending me notes. I really appreciate them. He was a good dog who now is in a better place where he doesn't feel sick, chasing squirrels without getting in trouble and getting as dirty as he can and enjoying every minute of it. And believe me, he can get himself very dirty.)

It almost felt as if spring had sprung with the warmer weather this week and the vast amounts of snow trying to melt. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Sarah now has so many bags of snacks, she's all set for months now. Time to look forward to the New Year and all that it promises to bring. Just a couple more months of winter and before we know it spring will be peeking through.

I got word Wednesday morning from Monroe County's Seneca Park Zoo. Officials reported its pair of reindeer had disappeared! Crimson and Simone were not in their exhibit in the Rocky Coasts exhibit when zookeepers made their morning rounds. Many reindeer hoof prints were found at and around the exhibit as well as a scrap of red cloth caught on a branch.

Then, Christmas Day, Crimson and Simone had mysteriously returned! Zookeepers arrived yesterday morning to find the two reindeer fatigued, but in good health. Their whereabouts have yet to be determined, however, a note was found near the exhibit that said, 'Thanks for the help again this year. You've taken such good care of Crimson and Simone all year long that they were able to help me complete my mission in record time!' signed (You know who).

Seneca Park Zoo will be open everyday. The animals await a visit from you. Zoo hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day (zoo grounds are open until 5 p.m.). Admission prices: $5 ages 12-62, $4 age 63+, $2 ages 3-11 and FREE for ages 2 and younger.

Every year, I have done the Christmas pjs tradition. (It was something my mom always did, as well.) This year, since everyone needed a pillow, or would soon be in need of one, I thought as an extra gift for my family, I would give them each a new pillow. Pillows just seem to be one of those things you put off purchasing. So, if you give one at Christmas time, every year the family will have new pillows. (Instead of every 5 or 6 years, as they do in my house.) I had read in a book that another fun tradition is to wrap up a book for each member of the family and put it in their room for them to unwrap first thing when they wake up. It's also fun to decorate a small tree and surprise the kids with the Christmas lights glowing first thing in the morning.

Plans for fun and creative crafts at the Kraft Shack:

WILTON CAKE COURSE II Four Nights (Must attend all nights) Tues., Jan. 13,Thurs., Jan. 15, Jan. 20 & Jan. 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Learn how to make flowers, borders and much more. $40 includes Course II kit, some other supplies are extra. As always, please be sure to pre-register.

I tried to find places to go on New Year's Eve. If you don't want to go out, staying in can be fun as well. Pick up some noisemakers, and cute hats, and some chips with dips or cheese and crackers. Decide what favorite foods you'd like to have for dinner...and for after dinner, while you wait for the ball to fall, you could rent a movie ( probably will need a couple). Have some of your favorite snacks. The kids love the sparkling grape juice to toast the coming of the new year. Another idea is to make a Funfetti cake you find in the grocery store. Frost with the Funfetti frosting and you have a celebration for dessert. The curling ribbon you find in the store at Christmastime can be gently curled and hung along the doorways for a party look.

If you have some ideas, please send them along for me to share

It would be fun to know what others do on New Year's. I know some stand in a huge crowd in Times Square and freeze patiently waiting for the huge ball to drop. Have a fun New Year's Eve whatever you decide to do, and have fun with the family while the kids are out for vacation.

Have a Happy New Year.
